Deep it drinks to poison sow

Bound be Heart, the mind enslaving

Into Dark your Power flow.

"That is what ancient history has to do with this warning."

Selarial turned away abruptly. Alcar sensed her emotion had nothing to do with him, rather it was a deep and abiding anger for what had been done to her people in a past seeming very remote to him, but he knew for her it was not.

The look she turned on him was cold. "Our lives are long, our memories even longer. We of the Eldar do not forget. It is well we do not, evil always rises again."

One knife? She couldn't be serious, Alcar thought.

"What makes you think there is only one? The Towers were cleansed. We thought we had found and destroyed all the caches. Yet, we were mistaken. The Thess'ns have found at least one. I do not need to tell you what they'll do with that kind of power in their hands. That blade may be the least of what they've found. Fortunately, most of those weapons can only be wielded by one trained in the use of power and domination of others. That fact may give us a breathing space. I would hope there are none still living who have truly mastered those arts."

"But you are not sure." Alcar added.

She nodded soberly. "You have traveled enough to know there are several races who can claim at least some psychic talent if one type or another. Most are a matter of birth, racial heritage and not training alone. I cannot remember a race so gifted in the Thess'n Empire, the Thess'ns certainly are not. That does not mean they have no resources. All it would take is a scant handful perverted to their evil and armed with Tarkus weapons to do great harm."

While she had been speaking, Alcar was thinking – mostly of the peculiar danger this put her in. It was obvious now why Jortang had tried to lure her into a trap.

Alcar woke the next morning to see Selarial in formal Singer attire. He rubbed his eyes, as if expecting that to change what he saw. She was imposing, even austere. Why?

"Selarial, what's going on?" he asked, not awake enough to think it through yet.

She turned and he had only the briefest glimpse of the stern expression, before she smiled. It struck him again, how her smile was like the rising of the sun.

"Good Morning, I was wondering how long you were going to sleep. I must go see the Admiral as soon as he's in his office, about the warning."

Without an appointment, he thought, frowning. Then again, she looked ready to have officious secretaries for breakfast. That explained the civilian dress.

"Give me a moment and I'll go with you," he said.

"No, Alcar. Kirrlea will go with me. This is Singer business. Don't worry. He will listen to what the Council has sent."

"And Roth?" Alcar wondered at the exclusion. The Lidan was just as important a part of the team.

Selarial burst out laughing; the brightness of it welled in his mind.
